The economy in Europe and the US is failing. The U.S. economy, especially, is fueled by a massive credit bubble. Real estate, stocks and bonds are at a high point and due for a crash. If you think the economy’s bad now, just wait until that happens, probably later this year. There will be massive inflation, maybe even hyperinflation. I’m no expert but I know people who are.
Our generation, the Boomers, totally drank the Kool-Aid. I remember going to India and when I came back, the hippies of the 60s and 70s had become the yuppies of the 80s and 90s. They totally sold out our spiritual values, which says they never really believed in them in the first place. It was just another social fad.
Then they went and sold out the Gen X and and Millennials, exploiting them in sweatshops euphemistically termed ‘startups’, trading their youth for (mostly) false hopes of viral success. I’m embarrassed by their lack of integrity.
I left the US after 9/11 because I saw the writing on the wall when almost no one else did. The 1%, police security state, eternal war etc. are no surprise. A small group of elites gains control of the economy and the government, sucks all the value out of the commons, and leaves it to crash. It’s nothing but colonialism, an historical pattern that has played out again and again. Now I live in a Buddhist country with low expenses, otherwise I almost certainly would be homeless and struggling.
People have been deliberately trained by school to be incapable of learning and acting independently. Young people’s attention span and initiative are microscopic. I know this from my spiritual teaching work. I had to create a course to handle learning disability before anyone could get through any of my other courses. They have been shafted. Trained to be dependent on a job, and now guess what, there are no jobs. Unethical accounting and exploitive business practices have turned productive companies into cash cows for unscrupulous investors.
IMHO the only real hope for most of the 99% is to learn to live cooperatively. Start a community around what you love, find others with similar passions and share your income and expenses. Rugged individualism is extinct. Evolution has made it redundant. The US is well on the way becoming an authoritarian third-world country. You will have to develop community building skills to survive. Do it now before things get even tougher.
This time next year, remember who tried to warn you.
